Synopsis:

“Based on the short story by Igor Teper, The Secret Number is about a man whose world is thrown into question. Psychiatrist Simon Tomlin (Daniel Jones) has a troubling conversation with one of his patients — a brilliant mathematician named Ersheim (Tom Nowicki), who intends to prove the existence of a secret integer between three and four. Ersheim’s delusion compels Tomlin to dig deeper, but he only uncovers more questions — about fate, connection…the nature of reality.”

This is a graduation Production made by three students graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts.

The main character of little girl in the story confronts a robbery and strays from the road she is familiar with. After passing a hedge, she enters an unknown world and unfolds a magical adventure depending on senses other than vision and her imagination. With soft and cute colors as the main key, we used simple designs to depict the little girls’ imaginary world.

And, of course, a twist at the end.

Have you ever toyed with the idea of building your very own time machine and wandering back in time - visiting past memories; perhaps doing things a little bit different the second time around?

No? Never?

Well, that’s the basis of this lovely little feel-good short film, “A Little Bit Behind” made by a creative trio of channel Seven staff. Filmed in less then a day (so they say…), “A Little Bit Behind” is about a laid-back aussie bloke named “Stevo” who is, well….a little bit behind, three-seconds behind to be precise. It has been selected to feature at the Cannes Film Festival and won Best Film, Best Script and Best Actor at the 48 Hour Film Project - Sydney.

Solipsist, by Andrew Huang

When your mind turns to body horror, you generally think of tentacles and geysers of bloods, not garlands and bursts of twinkling confetti. But indeed, that is what precipitates in director Andrew Thomas Huang’s experimental fantasy film Solipsist. Human flesh evolves into living dreamcatchers and eddies of colored sand. It is equal parts stunning and utterly bizarre.

Solipsist, which was funded via Kickstarter, won the Special Jury Prize for Experimental Short at the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival. You can also watch a making-of reel if the flamboyant effects have piqued your interest. Here’s the synopsis, but “Tetsuo’s final scene from Akira + Mardi Gras” may be just as apt:

A three part psychedelic fantasy short film about otherworldly beings whose minds and bodies converge into one entity. Filled with elaborate costumes, visual effects, and underwater puppets, the film is a non-narrative experience designed to transport viewers through a hypnotic, dream-like journey.

[Andrew Huang via Coilhouse]

This was produced over a year ago, so it’s already wildly out of date, but anincredibledemonstration of what this technology (and the PS3 platform itself) is capable of.

Short film? This demo certainly is, although the technology behind it is geared towards video gaming.

Life is transparent, warm and swirls randomly like a soft light. And it constantly changes…
Life illuminates itself and then it begins to illuminates a new life.
A sprouted mass of innumerable lights become a flow before long, and then become the part of the life-throb of ages.
That ties life, this moment now.

—
Director : Daihei Shibata
Piano : Naomi Yaguchi
Music : Debussy

An abstract piece set to Claire De Lune. Gorgeous visuals.

Mon Ami le Robot

Short directed at Cube Creative during summer 2010 by Gobelins students Louis Thomas, Theo Guignard and Benjamin Moreau.

Music and sound : Adrien Casalis

Court métrage réalisé pendant l’été 2010 par des stagiaires des Gobelins Louis Thomas, Theo Guignard et Benjamin Moreau.

Musique & son : Adrien Casalis

Some more from Gobelins. Again, no dialogue. A wonderful exploration of lighting in animation, but also a touching narrative skipping over themes of friendship, need and sacrifice.

Plot Device
